Functional Medicine vs. Conventional Medicine

Where the two overlap, where they differ, and how they can work together.

Where they overlap

Both rely on a medical history, physical examination and, where useful, lab testing. Many functional medicine practitioners are conventionally trained physicians, and many conventional doctors also emphasize nutrition and lifestyle.

Where they tend to differ

Functional medicine visits are often longer and focus heavily on lifestyle, diet and daily habits. Practices are more often cash-pay or membership-based. Some functional medicine tests are not part of standard guidelines, so it is worth asking what evidence supports a given test or treatment.

Using both

Keep your primary care doctor and any specialists informed. Bring a list of all supplements and medications to every appointment, since some supplements interact with prescription drugs. Emergencies and acute symptoms belong with conventional urgent or emergency care.
